From the early 1960s, here is what looked like an early version of the Postman Lovable Truly starring in a commercial for Post Alpha Bits Cereal. 

Comedian Jack E. Leonard did the Postman's voice.  But the story went that executives at Post----or perhaps, more likely, the cereal company's parent General Foods----hated the idea of an insult comic pushing their cereal, so the character was redesigned and recast.
