From 1928, here's Farmer Al Falfa starring in "Dinner Time," part of the Aesop's Fables series filmed in New York City, produced by Amadee J. Van Beuren, directed by series creator Paul Terry and co-directed by John Foster. This was one of the very first synchronized sound animated cartoons. It was premiered in New York City on September 1, 1928 and released by Pathe Film Exchange on October 14, a month before Walt Disney's "Steamboat Willie, " which premiered on November 28 at the 79th Street Theater, also in New York City.
Paul Terry, who was not happy about the added cost of sound to his films, left Fables Studios not long after this film was released and launch a new cartoon studio with animator Frank Moser. This was the studio that became known as Terrytoons.

From The WTF Department: A Musical Directed by Alfred Hitcock
From 1933, here's "Waltzes From Vienna," starring Jessie Matthews, future Academy Award winner Edmund Gwenn, and Fay Compton. Based on the London Alhambra success by Heinz Reichert, Dr. A. M. Willner, and Ernst Marischka and the musical arrangement of Julius Bittner and Erich W. Korngold. With the music of both Johann Strauss Senior and Junior, adpatated for the screen by Hubert Bath, under the direction of Louis Levy, scenario by Guy Bolton and Alma Reville (Mrs. Alfred Hitchcock), this motion picture was, yes, directed by Alfred Hitchcock. This was his first directorial effort for Gaumont-British Picture Coroporation. Produced by Tom Arnold (not THAT one).

Time now, boys and girls, the 15th and final chapter in our 1940 Columbia Pictures serial, The Green Archer, entitled "The Green Archer Exposed."
This serial stars Victor Jory and Iris Meredith, with James Craven and Robert Fiske.
Based upon Edgar Wallace's novel, "The Green Archer," the screenplay for this serial was written by Morgan Cox, John Cutting, Jesse A. Duffy, and James W. Horne.
Directed by James W. Horne, who had directed many two-reel comedies for Hal Roach.

Sidney Lumet, R. I. P.
Veteran motion picture director Sidney Lumet, who directed hard-hitting films ranging from "12 Angry Men" to "Network" to "Dog Day Afternoon," and who preferred the streets of New York to the back lots of Hollywood, passed away on Saturday at his home in Manhattan from lymphoma at age 86.

UCONN DEFEATS COLD-SHOOTING BUTLER FOR THIRD NCAA MEN'S BASKETBALL CROWN

Kemba Walker scored 16 points, and the Connecticut defense held Butler to a championship-game record-low 18.8% shooting as the Huskies won their third NCAA men's basketball national championship (their first since 2004) 53-41 Monday night. For coach Jim Calhoun, who, at age 68, became the oldest coach ever to win the championship, his third title puts him in an elite class: Only John Wooden, Adolph Rupp, Bob Knight, and Mike Krzyzewkski have an many or more titles.
