George Lindsey, the actor best remembered for his portrayal of service station attendant Goober Pyle on The Andy Griffith Show, Mayberry RFD, and Hee Haw, passed away on Sunday morning in Nashville after a brief illness at age 83.
Mr. Lindsey began playing the role of Goober on the Andy Griffith Show in 1964 after Jim Nabors, who played Gomer Pyle (who once mentioned Goober as his cousin), left the series to star in his own spinoff, Gomer Pyle, USMC.
George would continue to portray Goober on the Andy Griffith Show's successor series Mayberry RFD (1968-71) and then on Hee Haw (1971-92).
