Don Coryell, the former head football coach at San Diego State (1961-72) who found success in the NFL as head coach of the St. Louis Cardinals (1973-77) and San Diego Chargers (1978-86), passed away on Thursday at a La Mesa, California hospital at age 85.
The cause of death was not revealed, though he had been ill for some time.
Coach Coryell coach the Cardinals to division titles in 1974 and 1975 and their first playoff berths since 1948 (when they were in Chicago).
It was, however, as head coach of the Chargers that his Air Coryell offense set records and placed San Diego in back-to-back AFC championship games after the 1980 and '81 seasons.
Quarterback Dan Fouts, wide receiver Charlie Joyner, and tight end Kellen Winslow all ended up in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Coach Coryell became the first man to win 100 games as a head coach in both college and pro football.
