Late Rally Carries Cards Past Niners

Quarterback John Skelton replaced an injured Kevin Kolb and threw three touchdown passes (60 yards to Early Doucet in the second quarter, 46 yards to Larry Fitzgerald in the third, and the game-winning three-yarder in the fourth to Andre Roberts) as the Arizona Cardinals (6-7) came back from a 12-point deficit to upend the visiting San Francisco 49ers (10-3) 21-19 on Sunday for their fifth win in their last six starts, keeping their slim playoff chances alive.

Alex Smith threw for 267 yards and two touchdowns ( 8 yards to Kyle Williams and 18 yards to Vernon Davis) as the San Francisco 49ers (9-1) assured themselves of their first winning season since 2002 with their eighth consecutive victory on Sunday, 23-7 over the visiting Arizona Cardinals (3-7).

Niners Club Cards In Season Finale; NFL Playoff Field Set
At San Francisco:
Alex Smith threw a 59-yard touchdown pass to Vernon Davis in the third quarter as the San Francisco 49ers (6-10), in what was likely Jim Tomsula's one game as interim head coach, buried the visiting Arizona Cardinals (5-11) 38-7 in the season finale for both teams on Sunday.
The field for the playoffs is now set.
NATIONAL FOOTBALL CONFERENCE:
The top two seeds will have next weekend off and will host divisional playoff games the weekend of January 15 and 16.
1. Atlanta Falcons (13-3)
2. Chicago Bears (11-5)
New Orleans (11-5) travels to Seattle (7-9, first team to reach the playoffs with a losing record in a non-strike season) for a Saturday opening round game, starting at 1:30 PM.
Green Bay (10-6) will be at Philadelphia (10-6) for a Sunday contest that starts at 1:30 PM

NFC Worst: Niners Stay In Hunt As Rams And Seahawks Lose At Home; Cardinals Eliminated
Yes sir, boys and girls, in that junkyard known as the Western Division of the National Football Conference, even after getting piled upon in San Diego the other night, the 5-9 San Francisco 49ers are still alive in the race for the division title with two weeks remaining in the regular season as St. Louis and Seattle (both 6-8) lost at home on Sunday to Kansas City (9-5) and Atlanta (12-2, clinching a playoff berth) respectively. Meanwhile, Arizona's (4-10) two-year run as division champions ended with their loss at Carolina (2-12).

Niners Top Sagging Cardinals To Escape Division Cellar---And Move Back Into Race

Brian Westbrook had his first 100-yard rushing game in two years Monday night----running for 136 yards and a touchdown as the San Francisco 49ers (4-7) picked up their first road win of the season (their Halloween contest in London against Denver was designated a Niners home game) 27-6 over the sagging Arizona Cardinals (3-8) , who have now lost six straight games. With their fourth win in six contests, San Francisco now moved to within one game of first place in the NFC's Western Division.
UPDATE: Frank Gore suffered a fractured hip in the game and is done for the season.

Drew And Reggie Help Saints Bury Cards
The National Football League entered its divisional playoff stage on Saturday.
At New Orleans:
Quarterback Drew Brees threw for three touchdowns and Reggie Bush scored two others, one on a 46-yard run and the other on an 83-yard punt return, as the New Orleans Saints hammered the visiting Arizona Cardinals 45-14 Saturday in an NFC divisional playoff.
The Saints will play host to the winner of Sunday's Dallas-Minnesota contest in next Sunday's NFC Championship Game.

Linebacker Karlos Dansby's 17-yard fumble return for a touchdown in overtime lifted the Arizona Cardinals to a 51-45 win over the Green Bay Packers in an NFC Wild-Card game on Sunday. It was the highest scoring playoff game in NFL history. Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner threw for five touchdowns (two each to Larry Fitzgerald and Early Doucet and one to Steve Breaston) in the contest while his Packers counterpart Aaron Rodgers threw for four scores (one each to Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson, James Jones, and Spencer Havner) and ran for one himself, but threw one interception and committed the overtime fumble that was run back for the Cards' game-winning score.
This coming Saturday, the Cardinals will play the New Orleans Saints on the road in an NFC divisional playoff (1:30 PM Pacific Time/Fox).
Dallas will be at Minnesota in the other NFC semifinal next Sunday (10:00 AM Pacific Time/Fox).
