Stanley Cup Playoffs: Bruins Ambush Flyers In Series Opener; 2OT Goal Squares Series For Predators

Two games were played on Saturday as the Stanley Cup Playoffs continued.


Eastern Conference:


At Philadelphia:


David Krejci and Brad Marchand each scored twice as the Boston Bruins throttled the Philadelphia Flyers 7-3 on the road in the opening contest of their conference semifinal series.


Western Conference:


Matt Halischuk scored the game-winning goal at 14:51 of the second overtime period while Pekka Rinne stopped 44 of 45 shots as the Nashville Predators squared their series at one game apiece following their game-two road win 2-1 over the Vancouver Canucks.

Turnovers Help Sink VooDoo

At Chicago:


Despite leading in every major statistical category, five costly turnovers cost the New Orleans VooDoo (1-6) dearly as they fell on the road Saturday night 50-28 in Arena Football League action to the Chicago Rush (5-2).

Stanley Cup Playoffs: Lightning, Sharks Take Conference Semifinal Series Openers

The second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs continued with two games on Friday.


Eastern Conference:


At Washington:


Sean Bergenheim, Steve Downie, Steven Stamkos (PP), and Dominic Moore (EN) each scored a goal while Dwayne Roloson stopped 26 of 28 shots as the Tampa Bay Lightning defeated the Washington Capitals 4-2 in the opening game of their conference semifinal series.


Western Conference:


At San Jose, California:


Benn Ferriero scored the game winner at 7:03 of overtime as the San Jose Sharks won the opening contest at home of their conference semifinal with the Detroit Red Wings 1-0.

NBA Playoffs: Grizzlies Oust Spurs For First Playoff Series VictoryAt

At Memphis:


Zack Randolph scored 31 points and grabbed 11 rebounds on Friday as the Memphis Grizzlies knocked off the top-seeded team in the Western Conference, the San Antonio Spurs 99-91 in game six of their conference quarterfinal series, to finish off the Spurs four games to two for their first-ever playoff series triumph.  This marked the conclusion of the opening round of the NBA Playoffs.  The Grizzlies will take on the Oklahoma City Thunder in a Western Conference semifinal series that starts this coming Sunday at Oklahoma City.

NBA Playoffs: Hawks, Lakers, Mavs Advance

Three games were played on Thursday as the opening round of the NBA Playoffs continued.


Eastern Conference:


At Atlanta:


Joe Johnson scored 23 points while Jamal Crawford added 19 coming off the bench as the Atlanta Hawks advanced to the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs for the third straight year following their 84-81 home win in game six of their conference quarterfinal series with Orlando, eliminating the Magic four games to two, this despite a 25-point, 15-rebound night from Orlando's Dwight Howard.  The Hawks will take on the Chicago Bulls in a conference semifinal series which starts this coming Monday night in Chicago.


Western Conference:


At New Orleans:


Kobe Bryant scored 24 points (22 in the first three quarters) while Andrew Bynum added 18 (to go with his 12 rebounds) as the Los Angeles Lakers manhandled the New Orleans Hornets 98-80 on the road in game six of their first-round series to finish off the Hornets four games to two.


At Portland, Oregon:


Dirk Nowitzki scored 33 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Dallas Mavericks finished off the Portland Trail Blazers with a 103-96 road win in game six despite Portland's Gerald Wallace's 32 points as the Mavericks took their conference quarterfinal series four games to two.  Dallas will take on the Los Angeles Lakers in a Western Conference semifinal series with the Lakers holding home-court advantage.

Stanley Cup Playoffs: Canucks Blank Predators In Series Opener

The second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs got underway on Thursday with one game, from the Western Conference.


At Vancouver, British Columbia:


Roberto Luongo stopped all 20 shots while Christopher Higgins scored the only goal of the contest at 12:14 of the second period as the Vancouver Canucks blanked the visiting Nashville Predators 1-0 in the opening round of a Western Conference semifinal series, which of course, is best-of-seven.

Time For A Charlie Chan Movie

From Monogram Pictures in 1946, here is Sidney Toler starring as Charlie Chan in "Dark Alibi."  In this one, three men are convicted of bank robbery, the main evidence against them being that their fingerprints were found at the scene.  However, Charlie Chan believes them to be innocent.  His investigation reveals that they are indeed innocent and that their fingerprints were forged and planted in the prison files to frame them.  Then, Charlie sets out to uncover the real bank robbers.  Mantan Moreland, Ben Carter, Benson Fong, Teala Loring, George Holmes, Joyce Compton, John Eldredge, Russell Hicks, and Tim Ryan were also in the cast.  With original screenplay by George Callahan, based on the character created by Earl Derr Biggers, this picture was produced by James S. Burkett and directed by Phil Karlson.

Stanley Cup Playoffs: Bruins Oust Habs In OT of Game Seven; Lightning Come Back From 3-1 Series Deficit To Oust Penguins With Road Win In Decider

The opening round of the Stanley Cup playoffs concluded with two games played on Wednesday, both game sevens, both in the Eastern Conference.


At Boston:


Nathan Horton scored the winning goal at 5:43 of overtime as the Boston Bruins defeated the Montreal Canadians 4-3 to win their conference quarterfinal series four games to three.


At Pittsburgh:


The Tampa Bay Lightning came back from a three-games-to-one deficit to upend the Pittsburgh Penguins with a 1-0 road win in game seven and take their first-round series four games to three.  Sean Bergenheim scored the game's only goal at 5:41 of the second period while Dwayne Roloson stopped all 36 Pittsburgh shots.

NBA Playoffs: Heat Finish Off 76ers; Thunder Do Same To Nuggets; Spurs Stay Alive With OT Win

Three more games were played on Wednesday as the first round of the NBA Playoffs continued.


Eastern Conference:


At Miami:


Dwyane Wade scored 26 points while Chris Bosh added 22 to go with his 11 rebounds as the Miami Heat won their first playoff series since winning their NBA title five years ago with a 97-91 game-five home win over the Philadelphia 76ers with the Heat winning their conference quarterfinal series four games to one.


Western Conference:


At San Antonio:


After Gary Neal connected on a game-tying three-pointer with 1.7 seconds remaining in regulation time, the San Antonio Spurs outscored the visiting Memphis Grizzlies 13-6 in the overtime period of game five to win 110-103 to cut the Grizzlies' series advantage to three games to two.  Manu Ginobili scored 33 points to pace the Spurs, who avoided elimination with the win.


At Oklahoma City:


Kevin Durant scored 41 points as the Oklahoma City Thunder overcame a nine-point deficit with four minutes remaining to top the visiting Denver Nuggets 100-97 in game five of their first-round series to finish off their divisional rivals four games to  one for their first playoff series victory since 2005 when the franchise was still located in Seattle.

Stanley Cup Playoffs: Canucks Foil Blackhawks Comeback; Flyers Take Series Decider At Home; Habs Force Game Seven At Boston

The first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs continued with three games on Tuesday.


Eastern Conference:


At Philadelphia:


Danny Briere and James van Riemsdyk scored power play goals in the second period as the Philadelphia Flyers eliminated the Buffalo Sabres by winning the seventh and deciding game of their conference quarterfinal series in dominating fashion, 5-2 at home.


At Montreal:


Brian Gionta scored the winning goal at 5:48 of the third period while Carey Price stopped 31 of 32 shots as the Montreal Canadiens won game six of their first-round series with the Boston Bruins 2-1 at home to force a seventh and deciding game on Wednesday night back at Boston.


Western Conference:


At Vancouver, British Columbia:


Despite failing to connect on the first penalty shot ever to be taken in a seventh game of a playoff series, Alex Burrows scored twice, including the game winner at 5:22 of overtime as the Vancouver Canucks avoided what would have been an epic playoff collapse with a 2-1 home win over the Chicago Blackhawks in the seventh and deciding game of their conference quarterfinal series.  Roberto Luongo stopped 31 of 32 Chicago shots. The Canucks will next take on the Nashville Predators in a Western Conference semifinal series.

NBA Playoffs: Bulls Finish Off Pacers; Magic Stay Alive By Roasting Hawks; Lakers Take 3-2 Series Lead

Three Tuesday games were played as the opening round of the NBA Playoffs continued.


Eastern Conference:


At Chicago:


Derrick Rose scored 25 points and Luoi Deng added 24 as the Chicago Bulls clearly played their best game in their conference quarterfinal series with Indiana, thumping the Pacers 118-89 at home in game five to win their best-of-seven series four games to one.


At Orlando:


Jason Richardson scored 17 points while J. J. Redick added 14 as the Orlando Magic roasted the visiting Atlanta Hawks 101-76 to stay alive in their opening-round series, cutting the Hawks' lead to three games to two.


Western Conference:


At Los Angeles:


With a sprained left ankle, Kobe Bryant still scored 19 points and threw down two big dunks while Andrew Bynum added 18 to go with his 10 rebounds as the Los Angeles Lakers took a three-games-to-two lead in their first-round series with a 106-90 home win in game five over the New Orleans Hornets.

Stanley Cup Playoffs: Lightning Force Game Seven With Penguins; Sharks Finish Off Kings In OT

Two more games were played in the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs on Monday.


Eastern Conference:


At Tampa, Florida:


41-year-old goalie Dwayne Rolonson stopped 27 of 29 shots while Steve Downie and Ryan Malone scored third-period goals to break a 2-2 deadlock as the Tampa Bay Lightning defeated the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins to force a seventh and deciding game in their conference quarterfinal series.  The Penguins continued to struggle on the power play, failing on all five attempts and going 1 for 30 in the series.


Western Conference:


At Los Angeles:


Joe Thornton scored the winning goal at 2:22 of overtime as the San Jose Sharks eliminated the Los Angeles Kings in six games following their 4-3 game-six triumph on the road.

NBA Playoffs: Grizzlies One Win Away From Eliminating Spurs; No Comeback For Blazers This Time As Dallas Takes 3-2 Series Lead; Nuggets Old Off OKC To Avoid Sweep

Three games were played on Monday as the first round of the NBA Playoffs continued, with all the action taking place in the Western Conference.


At Memphis:


The Memphis Grizzlies outscored the San Antonio Spurs 30-15 in the third quarter en route to a 104-86 game-four home win over the San Antonio Spurs to take a three-games-to-one lead in their conference quarterfinal series.  Mike Conley scored 15 point to lead the Grizzlies' balanced scoring attack.  Darrell Arthur added 14, Tony Allen 12, and 11 points apiece were scored by Zack Randolph and O. J. Mayo.  The Grizzlies can wrap up their first-ever playoff series triumph with a win at San Antonio on Wednesday.


At Dallas:


Dirk Nowitzki scored 25 points while Tyson Chandler pulled down 20 rebounds to go with his 14 points as the Dallas Mavericks recovered from their Saturday meltdown to take a three-games-to-two lead in their first-round series following a 93-82 home win in game five over the Portland Trail Blazers.  The Mavericks can close out the series with a win on Thursday night in Portland.


At Denver:


Ty Lawson scored a career playoff-high 27 points as the Denver Nuggets avoided elimination by holding off the visiting Oklahoma City Thunder 104-101 in game five in their opening-round series.  The Thunder still lead three games to one and can close out the series at home on Wednesday night.

Joe "The Jet" Perry, R. I. P.

Hall of Fame fullback Joe "The Jet" Perry who played sixteen seasons in professional football (1948-63), all but two of them with the San Francisco 49ers, passed away on Monday morning at age 84.

Mr. Perry became the first player in National Football League history to run for 1,000 or more yards in back-to-back seasons (1953, 1954).  He was part of what was called the "Million Dollar Backfield" which included quarterback Y. A. Tittle and fellow running backs Hugh McElhenny and John Henry Johnson, all of whom are enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1969, six years after his retirement, Joe ran for 9,723 career yards.  He made three Pro Bowls and led the Niners in rushing seven times.

NBA Playoffs: Celtics Complete Sweep of Knicks; 76ers Avoid Sweep Against Heat; Hawks Go Up 3-1; Hornets Square Series With Lakers At 2-2

Four more games were played on Easter Sunday as the NBA Playoffs continued with first-round action.


Eastern Conference:


At New York:


26 points and 10 rebounds from Kevin Garnett along with 21 points and 12 assists from Rajon Rondo carried the Boston Celtics to a 101-89 road win over the New York Knicks to complete a four-game sweep of their conference quarterfinal series, spoiling a 32-point performance from the Knicks' Carmelo Anthony.


At Philadelphia:


Lou Williams, who scored 17 points, connected on the go-ahead three-pointer with 8.1 seconds remaining as the Philadelphia 76ers avoided a four-game sweep of their first-round series with a 86-82 game-four home win over the Miami Heat, cutting the series deficit to three games to one.  This after the 76ers were trailing by six points with 95 seconds left.


At Atlanta:


Jamal Crawford scored 25 points while Joe Johnson, who added 20, hit four key free throws in the final 20 seconds as the Atlanta Hawks again held off the Orlando Magic 88-85 in game four of their opening-round series to take a three-games-to-one series advantage.


Western Conference:


A triple-double for Chris Paul (27 points, 13 rebounds, and 15 assists), his first of the season, helped guide the New Orleans Hornets to a 93-88 home win in game four of their first-round series with the Los Angeles Lakers, squaring the series at two games apiece.

Stanley Cup Playoffs: Flyers, Blackhawks Force Game Sevens With OT Wins; Predators Win Playoff Series For First Time

The opening round of the National Hockey League's Stanley Cup Playoffs continued with three more games.


Eastern Conference:


At Buffalo, New York:


Danny Briere scored twice (once on a power play) and Ville Leino scored the game winner at 4:43 of overtime as the Philadelphia Flyers overcame deficits of 3-1 and 4-3 to defeat the home standing Buffalo Sabres 5-4 to square their conference quarterfinal series at three games apiece and force a seventh and deciding game back home at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on Tuesday.


Western Conference:


At Nashville:


Nick Spaling scored twice while Pekka Rinne made 25 saves as the Nashville Predators eliminated the visiting Anaheim Ducks with a 4-2 victory in game six of their first-round series, advancing to the second round of the playoffs for the first time in franchise history.


At Chicago:


Ben Smith scored the winning goal at 15:30 of overtime as the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the visiting Vancouver Canucks 4-3 to even their opening-round series at three games apiece.  This marked the seventh time that the team that trailed three-games-to-none in a best-of-seven series came back to force game seven.  Three of those teams (Toronto, 1942 Stanley Cup Finals; New York Islanders, 1975 quarterfinal round; Philadelphia, 2010 Eastern Conference semifinals) were able to complete the comeback.  The Blackhawks will try to complete the comeback on Tuesday night at Vancouver.

Stanley Cup Playoffs: Caps Finish Off Rangers; Bruins Beat Habs On 2OT To Go Up 3-2; Lightning Too Much For Penguins; Kings Stay Alive

Four games were played on Saturday as the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs continued.


Eastern Conference:


At Pittsburgh:


Steven Stamkos and Simon Gagne each scored twice (the former scored once on the power play) while Pavel Kubina had two power play tallies of his own as the Tampa Bay Lightning avoided elimination by demolishing the Pittsburgh Penguins 8-2 on the road in game five, cutting the Pittsburgh advantage to three games to two.


At Washington:


Mike Green (PP), Alex Ovechkin, and Alexander Semin each scored once while Michal Neuvirth stopped 26 of 27 shots as the Washington Capitals eliminated the New York Rangers in five games following their 3-1 home triumph in the fifth game of their conference quarterfinal series.


At Boston:


Nathan Horton scored the winning goal at 9:03 of the second overtime period while Tim Thomas made 44 saves out of 45 shots as the Boston Bruins picked up the first win of their opening-round series by the home team, 2-1 over the Montreal Canadiens.


Western Conference:


At San Jose, California:


Jonathan Quick made a franchise playoff-record 51 saves while Wayne Simmonds, Kyle Clifford, and Dustin Penner each tallied once during a stretch of just over five minutes in the first period as the Los Angeles Kings avoided elimination with a 3-1 win on the road over the San Jose Sharks, who still lead their first-round series three games to two.

NBA Playoffs: Blazers Erase 23-Point Deficit To Square Series With Mavs At 2-2; Pacers Avoid Sweep; Grizzlies Pick Up First Home Playoff Win; Thunder Hold Off Nugs To Go Up 3-0

Four games were played on Saturday as the NBA Playoffs continued.


Eastern Conference:


At Indianapolis:


With Danny Granger scoring 24 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, the Indiana Pacers withstood a furious Chicago rally, foiling the Bulls' hopes of sweeping the series by winning game four of their conference quarterfinal series 89-84 at home to cut Chicago's series lead to three games to one.  It was the Pacers' first playoff win since 2006.  The Bulls can still win the series with a game-five win at home on Tuesday


Western Conference:


At Portland, Oregon:


Brandon Roy scored 18 of his 24 points the fourth quarter, including the go-ahead bank shot with 39.2 seconds remaining as the Portland Trail Blazers overcame a 23-point deficit in the final 14 minutes as they defeated the visiting Dallas Mavericks 84-82 to square their opening-round series at two games apiece.


At Memphis, Tennessee:


Zach Randolph scored 25 points, three of them on a game-clinching basket with 41.9 seconds remaining as the Memphis Grizzlies knocked off the visiting San Antonio Spurs 91-88 for their first-ever home playoff victory, giving them a two-games-to-one lead in their first-round series.


At Denver:


Kevin Durant scored 26 points while Serge Ibaka added 22 while pulling down a career-high 16 rebounds and the Oklahoma City Thunder held off the Denver Nuggets 97-94 on the road in game three to lead their first-round series three games to none.

Stanley Cup Playoffs: OT Road Wins Give Sabres and Predators 3-2 Series Leads

Two more games were played on Friday as the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs continued.


Eastern Conference:


At Buffalo:


Tyler Ennis scored twice, scoring the game winner at 5:31 of overtime as the Buffalo Sabres took game five of their conference quarterfinal series with the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 on the road to take a three-games-to-one lead.


Western Conference:


Jarred Smithson scored at 1:57 of overtime as the Nashville Predators knocked off the hosts Anaheim Ducks 4-3 to take a three-games-to-two lead.  The Predators, with a win at home on Sunday, would win a playoff series for the first time in franchise history.

The Boston Celtics defeated the New York Knicks 113-96 on the road to take a commanding three-games-to-none lead in their conference quarterfinal series.  Paul Pierce scored 38 points, while Ray Allen added 32.  Rajon Rondo had a 15 point, 11 rebound, 20 assist (a Celtics playoff record) night.


At Atlanta:


Jamal Crawford headlined his 23-point night with a clutch three-pointer with 5.7 seconds remaining as the Atlanta Hawks, with their 88-84 game-three home win, took a two-games-to-one lead in their opening-round series with the Orlando Magic, despite Dwight Howard's 21 points and 15 rebounds.


Western Conference:


At New Orleans:


Kobe Bryant scored 30 points while Pau Gasol added 17 to go with his 10 rebounds as the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the New Orleans Hornets in game three of their opening-round series on the road, 100-86, to take a two-games-to-one advantage.

Pittsburgh Ends VooDoo's One-Game Winning Streak

At New Orleans:


The Pittsburgh Power (3-3), thanks to six touchdown passes from quarterback Anthony Morelli, defeated the New Orleans VooDoo (1-5) 56-49 on the road in Thursday Arena Football League action.

The Stanley Cup Playoffs continued on Thursday with three games.

At Montreal:


Michael Ryder scored twice, with his second goal being the game winner at 1:59 of overtime as the Boston Bruins squared their conference quarterfinal series with the Montreal Canadiens with a 5-4 win on the road.  The road team has won all four games in this series.


Western Conference:


At Vancouver, British Columbia:


Marian Hossa (with one power play tally) and Duncan Keith each scored twice while Corey Crawford stopped all 36 shots as the Chicago Blackhawks blasted the Vancouver Canucks 5-0 on the road in game five of their opening-round series to cut the Canucks' advantage to three games to two.


At Los Angeles:


Ryane Crowe delivered two goals (one on a power play), while the San Jose Sharks scored three third-period goals (Joe Thornton, Joe Pavelski, and Torrey Mitchell) as they defeated the Los Angeles Kings 6-3 in game four of their first-round series to take a three-games-to-one advantage.

At Philadelphia:


Dwyane Wade scored 32 points and 10 rebounds while LeBron James added 24 and 15 in those respective catagories as the Miami Heat edged the Philadelphia 76ers 100-94 in game three of their opening-round series to lead their series three games to none.


Western Conference:


At Portland, Oregon:


Wesley Matthews scored 25 points as the Portland Trail Blazers defeated the visiting Dallas Mavericks 97-92 in game three of their first-round series to cut the Mavericks' series advantage to two games to one.

Sol Saks, Creator of "Bewitched," R. I. P.

Veteran television writer and playwright Sol Saks, who wrote the pilot for the Bewitched television series, passed away this past Saturday from respiratory failure, stemming from pneumonia at Sherman Oaks (California) Hospital at the age of 100.

Stanley Cup Playoffs: OT Win Puts Caps Up 3-1; Penguins Up 3-1 Too; Wings Finish Sweep Of Coyotes; Ducks-Predators and Flyers-Sabres Series Deadlocked At 2-2

Five games were played on Wednesday as the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs continued.


Eastern Conference:


At New York:


Marcus Johansson scored twice in the third period and  Jason Chimera scored the game winner at 12:36 of the second overtime period as the Washington Capitals came back from a 3-0 deficit to defeat the New York Rangers 4-3 in game three of their conference quarterfinal series to take a three-games-to-one lead.


At Buffalo, New York:


Jason Pominville scored the only goal of the game in the first period while Ryan Miller stopped all 32 shots in posting his second shutout of the series as the Buffalo Sabres blanked the visiting Philadelphia Flyers 1-0 to even their first-round series at two games apiece.


At Tampa, Florida:


James Neal scored the winning goal at 3:38 of the second overtime period as the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 on the road to lead their first-round series three games to one.


Western Conference:


At Nashville, Tennessee:


Cam Fowler, Teemu Selanne, and Corey Perry each scored a power play goal as the Anaheim Ducks squared their series with the Nashville Predators at two games apiece following their 6-3 road triumph.


At Glendale, Arizona:


Patrick Eaves scored twice (once on an empty netter) as the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Phoenix Coyotes 6-3 to complete a four-game sweep of their first-round series.  The game may have been the Coyotes' final contest in Arizona.  

NBA Playoffs: Thunder Dominate Nuggets; Spurs, Lakers Square Respective Series At 1-1

Three games were played on Wednesday as the opening round of the NBA Playoffs continued.  All the action took place in the Western Conference.


At Oklahoma City:


Kevin Durant scored 23 points and Russell Westbrook added 21 as the Oklahoma City Thunder took care of the visiting Denver Nuggets 106-89 to take a two-games-to-none lead in their conference quarterfinal series.


At San Antonio:


Playing with a bulky brace on his elbow, Manu Ginobili scored 17 points as the San Antonio Spurs squared their first-round series with the Memphis Grizzlies at a game apiece with a 93-87 win at home.


At Los Angeles:


Andrew Bynum scored 17 points and pulled down 11 rebounds while Lamar Odom scored another 16 as the Los Angeles Lakers evened their series with the New Orleans Hornets at one game apiece following their 87-78 game-two home triumph.

Stanley Cup Playoffs: Sharks Erase Four-Goal Deficit To Top Kings In OT; Blackhawks Stay Alive

Two more games were played in the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs on Tuesday, both in the Western Conference.


At Chicago:


A pair of power play goals from Patrick Sharp, plus a one-goal, three-assist performance from Dave Bolland lifted the Chicago Blackhawks to a 7-2 home fist beating of the Vancouver Canucks in game four of their conference quarterfinal series, enabling the defending Stanley Cup champions to avoid a four-game sweep.


At Los Angeles:


Devin Setoguchi scored the game winner at 3:09 of overtime as the San Jose Sharks came back from a four-goal deficit (scoring five goals in the second period) and defeated the Los Angeles Kings 6-5 in game three of the opening-round series and took a two-games-to-one advantage.

NBA Playoffs: Celtics, Mavs Take 2-0 Series Leads; Magic Even Series With Hawks

The opening round of the NBA Playoffs continued on Tuesday with three games.


Eastern Conference:


At Boston:


Rajon Rondo scored a playoff career-high 30 points while Kevin Garnett scored the go-ahead bucket with 14 seconds remaining then stole the ball with 4 seconds left as the Boston Celtics overcame a 42 point, 17 rebound night from Carmelo Anthony to defeat the visiting New York Knicks 96-93 and take a two-games to none lead in their conference quarterfinal series.


At Orlando, Florida:


Dwight Howard scored 33 points and grabbed 19 rebounds as the Orlando Magic squared their series with the Atlanta Hawks at one game apiece following their 88-82 win at home.


Western Conference:


Dirk Nowitzki scored 33 points Peja Stojakovic added 21 (while sinking five three-pointers) and Jason Kidd contributed 18 as the Dallas Mavericks took a two-games-to-none advantage in their opening round series with a 101-89 home win over the Portland Trail Blazers.
