Time For A Horror Flick, Boys and Girls!

From Cameo Pictures in 1935, we bring you "Murder by Television," starring Bela Lugosi.  In this one, a scientist collapses while demonstrating his new television machine. This movie, with screenplay by Joseph O'Donnell, from an idea suggested by Clarence Hennecke and Carl Coolidge,  was directed by executive producer Charles Sanforth.  Bela is joined in the cast by June Collyer, Huntly Gordon, George Meeker, and Henry Mowbray.

Ducks Climb Up A Spot In Both Media And Coaches Poll, Drop A Spot In BCS Rankings; Beavers Drop To #100 In BCS Rankings

After having their hands full at home on Saturday with Washington State, the Oregon Ducks drop a spot to #8 in the Bowl Championship Series rankings released on Sunday.


The Ducks find themselves ranked sixth in both the Associated Press media and USA Today/Coaches polls, up a spot from last week in both polls.


After becoming Utah's first Pac-12 conference victims, the Oregon State Beavers drop five places in the BCS rankings to #100.



Niners Top Browns; Lead NFC West By Four Games

At San Francisco: 


Frank Gore ran for 134 yards and a touchdown while Alex Smith completed 15 of 24 passes for 177 yards and another score (two yards to Michael Crabtree) as the San Francicso 49ers (6-1) won their fifth straight National Football League game on Sunday, 20-10 over the visiting Cleveland Browns (3-4).  The Niners are off to their best start since 1998.

John White ran for a career-high 205 yards and a touchdown while Jon Hays threw two touchdown passes as the Utah Runnin' Utes (4-4 overall, 1-4 in Pac-12 play) picked up their first-ever Pac-12 Conference win on Saturday, 27-8 over the visiting Oregon State Beavers (2-6, 2-3)

Ducks Outlast Game Cougs To Stretch Winning Streak To Seven

At Eugene, Oregon:


De'Anthony Thomas scored two touchdowns (one on a 45-yard pass from quarterback Bryan Bennett, the other on a 93-yard kickoff return) while Lavasier Tuinei caught a pair of touchdown passes himself as the Oregon Ducks (ranked #7 in the BCS rankings; 7-1 overall, 5-0 in Pac-12 play) outlasted visiting Washington State (3-5, 1-4) 43-28 in Saturday action.

Riders End Losing Streak Win Home Win Over Ticats

At Regina, Saskatchewan:


Running back Neal Hughes scored the game's lone touchdown while Chris Milo made all three field goal attempts (11, 40, 12 yards) as the Saskatchewan Roughriders (5-12) ended a five-game losing streak with a 19-3 home win over the visiting Hamilton Tiger-Cats (8-9) in Saturday Canadian Football League action.

CARDINALS OVERCOME EARLY DEFICIT TO COP 11TH WORLD SERIES CROWN

Cards win 11th World Series


Chris Carpenter pitched six strong innings on three days' rest and the bullpen did the rest as the St. Louis Cardinals erased an early two-run deficit to defeat the visiting Texas Rangers 6-2 in game seven of the World Series on Friday to win their first world championship since 2006 and their 11th modern-era title overall.  David Freese, who had a double in the game, was named World Series Most Valuable Player.

2011 World Series: Cards Outlast Rangers In Extra-Inning Slugfest To Force Game Seven

2011 World Series: Mike Napoli's Two-RBI Double Carries Rangers To 3-2 Series Lead

At Arlington, Texas:


Mike Napoli


A go-head two-run double in the eighth inning by Mike Napoli (shown here) carried the Texas Rangers as they came back from a two-run deficit to defeat the visiting St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 in game five of the World Series on Monday night.  The series resumes Wednesday night in St. Louis.  The Rangers are one victory away from the first world championship in their 51-year history.

Ducks Climb Up Three Spots In BCS Rankings; Beavers Climb Too

In the wake of their Saturday demolition of Colorado, the Oregon Ducks climbed up three spots to #7 in the latest Bowl Championship Series rankings released on Sunday.


For the record, the Oregon State Beavers, following their Saturday beat down of Washington State, climbed up to #95.

Quarterback Sean Mannion threw for a career high 376 yards and four touchdowns while Malcolm Agnew ran for 103 more as the Oregon State Beavers (2-5 overall, 2-3 in Pac-12 play) dominated Washington State (3-4, 1-3) 44-21 on Saturday night.

2011 World Series: Big Albert's Round-Tripper Hat Trick Helps Cards Squash Rangers To Take 2-1 Series Lead

A five-hit for Albert Pujols (shown here), including three home runs enabled the St. Louis Cardinals (who scored in seven of the nine innings) to overpower the home-standing Texas Rangers 16-7 to take a two-games-to-one World Series lead on Saturday night.  Big Albert became the first player since Reggie Jackson in 1977 to hit three homers in one WS game.

In his first Canadian Football League start on Friday, quarterback Drew Tate threw for 251 yards and a touchdown as the Calgary Stampeders (9-7) defeated the struggling Saskatchewan Roughriders (4-12) 25-13 as the Riders suffered their fifth straight defeat.

2011 World Series: Two-Run Ninth Inning Carries Rangers To Series-Equalizing Win

The Texas Rangers, with two runs scored in the ninth inning (thanks to sacrifice fly ball RBIs from Josh Hamilton and Michael Young) came from behind to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1 on Thursday to square the World Series at one game apiece.  The next three games will take place in Arlington, Texas, beginning on Saturday.  Picture here, is Elvis Andrus, who singled in the ninth inning, advanced to second base, then to third on the Josh Hamilton sac fly, then scored the winning run on the Michael Young sac fly.

Pete Rugolo, R. I. P.

Pete Rugolo, the jazz composer and arranger best remembered in some quarters for composing the theme song from the classic 1963-67 television series The Fugitive, passed away from age-related causes at a nursing facility in Sherman Oaks, California on Sunday at age 95.

National League Championship Series: Cardinals Oust Brewers To Set Up World Series Showdown With Rangers

At Milwaukee:


David Freese, named series Most Valuable Player, hit a first-inning three-run homer as the St. Louis Cardinals wrapped up their 18th National League Pennant on Sunday with a 12-6 road win over the once-again error-plagued Milwaukee Brewers in game six of their league championship series.  The Cardinals will open up the World Series against the Texas Rangers at home on Wednesday night.

First Time Since 2001: No Playoffs For Riders

At Regina, Saskatchewan:


Travis Lulay completed 16 of 29 passes for 287 yards and two touchdowns on Sunday as the British Columbia Lions (9-6) picked up their eighth consecutive Canadian Football League victory (and ninth in their last ten starts) 29-18 on the road over the Saskatchewan Roughriders (4-11), whom, with the defeat, will miss the playoffs for the first time in ten years.

Ducks Ranked #10 In First BCS Rankings; Beavers Tied For 103rd

The first Bowl Championship Series rankings were released on Sunday and the Oregon Ducks (ranked #9 in the Associated Press media poll [same as last week] and #8 in the USA Today/Coaches poll [up one spot]) were ranked #10. Louisiana State University is ranked #1, followed by Alabama, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Boise State, Wisconsin, Clemson, Stanford, Arkansas, and the Ducks.


Out of the 120 Football Bowl Subdivision teams, the Oregon State Beavers were tied with New Mexico State for 103rd place.

Niners Come Back To Hand Lions First Loss

At Detroit:


Quarterback Alex Smith threw a six-yard touchdown pass to tight end Delanie Walker with 1:51 remaining as the San Francisco 49ers came from behind to knock off the previously undefeated Detroit Lions 25-19 in Sunday National Football League action.  Frank Gore carried the ball 15 times for 141 yards (including runs of 47 and 55 yards) and a touchdown (1 yard).  The defeat ended the Lions' regular-season winning streak at nine games dating back to last season.  The Niners now hold a 2 and 1/2 game lead atop the NFC West Division.  Both teams are now at 5-1.

Before being injured, quarterback Darron Thomas completed 13 of 17 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns (12 yards to David Paulson and 28 to Lavasier Tuinei) while Kenjon Barner ran for 171 yards and another score as the LaMichael James-less Oregon Ducks (5-1 overall, 3-0 in Pac-12 play; ranked #9 in both the media and coaches' polls) held off the visiting Arizona State Sun Devils (5-2, 3-1; 18th in the media poll, 20th in the coaches' poll) 41-27 on Saturday night.

Riley Nelson Helps Lead BYU Cougars To Victory In Corvallis

At Corvallis, Oregon:


Quarterback Riley Nelson threw for 217 yards and three touchdowns (12 yards to Cody Hoffman, 2 to J.D. Falslev, and 8 to Kaneakua Friel) and ran for 87 yards as the BYU Cougars (5-2) defeated the Oregon State Beavers (1-5) 38-28 on Saturday afternoon on the road.

American League Championship Series: Rangers Use Nine-Run Third Inning To Help Bury Tigers To Lock Up Second Straight Pennant

At Arlington, Texas:


Michael Young and series Most Valuable Player Nelson Cruz (who had six in this series) each belted a home run, while the Texas Rangers scored nine runs in the fourth inning on Saturday night to smother the visiting Detroit Tigers 15-5 to win, in six games, their second straight American League pennant and trip to the World Series.

Four Milwaukee errors led to three unearned runs as the St. Louis Cardinals took game five of the National League Championship Series 7-1 on Friday.  The Redbirds lead the series three games to two and can wrap up their first National League pennant in five years with a victory in game six back in Milwaukee on Saturday.

Despite giving up two early home runs, Randy Wolf settled down and ended up with a strong performance, scattering six hits in seven innings for his first postseason win at age 35, while Ryan Braun collected a pair of hits, as the Milwaukee Brewers evened the National League Championship Series with the St. Louis Cardinals at two games apiece following their 4-2 come-from-behind game-four road win on Thursday.

American League Championship Series: Tigers Avoid Elimination And Send Series Back To Texas

At Detroit:


Delmon Young hit two home runs as the Detroit Tigers outlasted the visiting Texas Rangers 7-5 in game four of the American League Championship Series on Thursday to cut the Rangers' advantage to three games to two.  The Rangers can still wrap up the American League pennant with a game-six win on Saturday back home at Arlington, Texas.

Nelson Cruz belted a three-run homer to cap off a four-run eleventh inning on Wednesday as the Texas Rangers took game four of the American League Championship Series 7-3 over the Detroit Tigers.  The Rangers, who now lead the series three games to one, can wrap up their second straight league title and second straight World Series appearance with a win on Thursday.

Eskimos Freeze Out Roughriders To Clinch Playoff Berth

At Edmonton, Alberta:


Jerome Messam scored the only touchdown of the game on a 51-yard run as the Edmonton Eskimos (8-6) locked up a Canadian Football League Grey Cup playoff berth on Monday (Thanksgiving Day in Canada) with a 17-1 home win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders (4-10), who are all but officially eliminated from playoff contention.

Ryan Braun's first-inning two-run homer was followed by two-run fifth-inning dingers courtesy of Prince Fielder and Yuniesky Betancourt as the Milwaukee Brewers outslugged the visiting St. Louis Cardinals 9-6 in the opening contest of the National League Championship Series on Sunday.

Niners Batter Bucs To Keep Two-Game Lead Atop NFC West

At San Francisco:


Quarterback Alex Smith threw for 170 yards and three touchdowns (two to tight end Vernon Davis) and Frank Gore racked up his second straight 100-yard game on the ground, picking up 125 yards and a touchdown in the process as the San Francisco 49ers (4-1), off to their best start in nine years, demolished the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-2) 48-3 in Sunday National Football League action.  The win, the Niners' most lopsided since 1987, keeps them two game ahead of Seattle atop the NFC West Division.

American League Championship Series: Rangers Hold Off Tigers In Rain-Plagued Opener

At Arlington, Texas:


Nelson Cruz hit a home run while C.J. Wilson and the bullpen held steady as the Texas Rangers held off the Detroit Tigers 3-2 in the opening game of the American League Championship Series on Saturday.  The game was delayed a total of one hour and fifty minutes by two rain delays.

At Last, A Win For The Beavers

At Corvallis, Oregon:


Sean Mannion threw for 267 yards and two touchdowns on Saturday as the Oregon State Beavers (1-4 overall, 1-2 in Pac-12 play), who had been the only remaining winless team in the BCS conferences, defeated visiting Arizona (1-5, 0-3) 37-27 for their first win of the season.

Roger Williams, Pianist, R. I. P.

Roger Williams, the pianist best remembered for his 1955 hit "Autumn Leaves," passed away on Saturday at his Los Angeles home a week following his 87th birthday of complications from pancreatic cancer.

Al Davis, Controversial Owner Of Oakland Raiders, R. I. P.

Al Davis, the controversial owner of the Oakland Raiders, passed away on Saturday at age 82.


Mr. Davis, who had been an assistant on Sid Gilman's staff with the San Diego Chargers, became the head coach and general manager of the Raiders in 1963.  Prior to his arrival, the Raiders won nine games in 42 starts in three seasons.


When he arrived, Al changed the personality of the franchise inside and out, changing the team colors from black and gold to silver and black and replacing the rounded numerals on the jerseys with squared blocked numerals.  The nondescript black helmets were replaced with silver ones with the Raiders' distinctive logo on each side.


In Al's first year, the Raiders finished second in the American Football League's Western Division at 10-4.  He was named the AFL Coach of the Year.


In 1966, he briefly served as AFL commissioner, helping in overseeing the merger with the rival National Football League before stepping down and becoming part owner of the Raiders.


In 1976, he became the Raiders' principal owner.


In 1982, Al made the controversial decision to move the club to Los Angeles.  In 1995, the Raiders returned to Oakland.


During Al's years with the Raiders, the team made five Super Bowl appearances, winning three of them (Super Bowls XI, XV, and XVIII).


Al Davis was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992.

National League Divisional Playoffs: It's Brewers Vs. Cardinals For Pennant

Both National League divisional playoff series were decided on Friday as both series went the full five games.


At Milwaukee:


Nyjer Morgan delivered a 10th-inning base hit that scored Carlos Gomez from second base as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-3 to win their divisional playoff series three games to two and advance to the National League championship series.  This was only the second playoff series victory in Brewers history---the other being in 1982 when they came back from a two-games-to-none deficit and defeated the then-California Angels in five games to win the American League pennant.


At Philadelphia:


Rafael Furcal led off the first inning with a triple and Skip Schumaker sent him home with a double that made the game's lone run possible while Chris Carpenter out-dueled Roy Halladay in pitching a three-hit complete-game shutout as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 1-0 on the road to win the fifth and deciding game of their divisional playoff series.



The National League Championship Series begins in Milwaukee on Sunday as the Brewers host the Cardinals in game one.  It's a rematch of the 1982 World Series in which the Redbirds defeated the then-American Leaguers four games to three.

Ducks Overcome Halftime Deficit To Blow Out Cal; LaMichael Injured

At Eugene, Oregon:


Before leaving Thursday night's game in the fourth quarter with an arm injury, LaMichael James ran for 239 yards and a touchdown (on a run of 53 yards) while DeAnthony Thomas had three scores (on a 17-yard run and receptions of 23 and 21 yards) as the Oregon Ducks (ranked #9 in both the AP and USA Today/Coaches polls; 4-1 overall, 2-0 in Pac-12 play) overcame a 15-14 halftime deficit to smother visiting California (3-0, 0-2) 43-15.

American League Divisional Playoffs: Tigers Knock Off Yanks In The Bronx; To Face Rangers For Pennant

At New York:


Don Kelly and Delmon Young hit consecutive home runs and Jose Valverde pitched a perfect ninth inning as the Detroit Tigers defeated the New York Yankees 3-2 Thursday night to win their American League divisional playoff series three games to five.  The Tigers will open the American League Championship Series against the Texas Rangers at Arlington on Saturday.  Justin Verlander will pitch the opener against the Rangers' C. J. Wilson.

National League Divisional Playoffs: Redbirds and Snakes Force Game Fives

Both National League divisional playoff series continued on Wednesday.


At St. Louis:


David Freese homered, doubled, and batted in four runs as the St. Louis Cardinals squared their divisional playoff series at two games apiece with a 5-3 home win over the Philadelphia Phillies in game four.  The Cards' victory has forced a fifth and deciding game in this best-of-five series to be played in Philadelphia on Friday.


At Phoenix, Arizona:


Ryan Roberts hit a grand slam home run while Chris Young belted two round-trippers for the first two-homer game in franchise history as the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the visiting Milwaukee Brewers 10-6 to square their series at two games apiece and force a fifth and deciding game on Friday back in Milwaukee.

Time for Tom and Jerry in "Down Beat Bear."  In this 1956 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer cartoon, a bear, who escaped from the circus, dances up a storm whenever he hears music, causing problems for Tom.  With animation by Ken Muse, Ed Barge, Irvin Spence, and Lewis Marshall, layout by Dick Bickenbach, backgrounds by Robert Gentle, and music by Scott Bradley, this cartoon, shown in its' original CinemaScope format, was produced and directed by Joe Barbera and Bill Hanna.

National League Divisional Playoffs: Cards Squander Chances As Phils Take 2-1 Series Lead; Snakes Bite Brewers To Stay Alive

Both National League divisional playoff series continued on Tuesday.


At St. Louis:


Pinch-hitter Ben Francisco's three-run shot with two out in the seventh inning provided the difference as the Philadelphia Phillies took a two-games-to-one divisional series lead following their 3-2 road win over the St. Louis Cardinals, who stranded 14 runners on base.


At Phoenix, Arizona:


Paul Goldschmidt hit a grand slam home run in the fifth inning while fellow rookie Josh Collmenter pitched seven strong innings of two-hit ball as the Arizona Diamondbacks avoided elimination by handily defeating the visiting Milwaukee Brewers 8-1 and cut their divisional playoff series deficit to two-games-to-one.

American League Divisional Playoffs: Rangers Finish Off Rays To Return To ALCS; Yanks Bash Tigers To Force Game Five Back Home

The American League divisional playoffs continued with two Tuesday affairs.


At Saint Petersburg, Florida:


Adrian Beltre belted three home runs (in three straight at bats) as the Texas Rangers held off the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 in game four of their divisional playoff series and finished off their opponents three games to one.  The Rangers advanced to their second straight AL Championship Series.


At Detroit:


A. J. Burnett (who started and pitched 5 2/3 innings) and three other pitchers surrendered only four base hits while Curtis Granderson made two key catches in the outfield as the New York Yankees erupted for six runs in the eighth inning en route to a 10-1 road fistbeating of the Detroit Tigers in game four of their divisional playoff series.  The fifth and deciding game will take place back in the Bronx on Thursday.

American League Divisional Playoffs: Tigers, Rangers One Win Each Away From American League Championship Series

Both American League divisional playoff series continued on Monday.


At Saint Petersburg, Florida:


Mike Napoli hit a two-run homer off starting pitcher David Price as part of a four-run seventh inning as the Texas Rangers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 to take a two-games-to-one lead in their best-of-five opening round series.  The Rangers can wrap up the series with a win on the road on Tuesday.


At Detroit:


In eight gritty innings of work, Justin Verlander struck out 11 batters while Jose Valverde stopped a New York rally for the second straight night, striking out Derek Jeter with two men on base in the ninth inning as the Detroit Tigers took game three with the visiting Yankees 5-4 to take a two-games-to-one series lead.  Delmon Young hit a tiebreaking home run off New York pitcher Rafael Soriano in the seventh inning.

Ducks At #9 In Media And Coaches Polls

After a weekend off, the Oregon Ducks rank #9 in both the Associated Press media (same as last week) and USA Today/Coaches (up two spots) polls.

National League Divisional Playoffs: Cards Square Series With Phillies; Brewers Go Up 2-0

The National League divisional playoffs continued with the second game of each respective series on Sunday.


At Milwaukee:


Ryan Braun hit a two-run home and Prince Fielder added an RBI single as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-4 to take a two-games-to-none lead in their best-of-five series.  The Brewers will go for the sweep at Arizona on Tuesday.


At Philadelphia:


The St. Louis Cardinals came back from a four-run deficit on the road to top the Philadelphia Phillies  5-4 to even their divisional playoff series at a game apiece.  The Cards scored four runs in the fourth inning, one more in the sixth, and, thanks to Albert Pujols' go-ahead single in the seventh, the game winning run.

At New York:


Miguel Cabrera drove in three runs on Sunday as the Detroit Tigers held off the New York Yankees 5-3 on the road to square their American League divisional playoff series at one game apiece.

Niners Erase 20-Point Deficit To Upend Eagles In Philly

At Philadelphia:


Quarterback Alex Smith threw for 291 yards and two touchdowns (30 yards to Josh Morgan and 9 yards to Vernon Davis, both in the third quarter) and Frank Gore, who ran for 127 yards, collected 12 of them on the game winning score with three minutes remaining as the San Francisco 49ers (3-1) overcame a 20-point third-quarter deficit and defeated the Philadelphia Eagles (1-3) 24-23 on the road in Sunday National Football League action as the Niners remained in sole possession of first place in the NFC West Division.

NRL (Australia) Grand Final: A Manly Win Over The Warriors

At Sydney, Australia:


The brothers Glenn and Brett Stewart each scored a try (five points apiece in rugby league) as the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles defeated the New Zealand Warriors 24-10 on Sunday to win their eighth National Rugby League championship.

Another Setback For The Beavers

At Tempe, Arizona:


Cameron Marshall ran for two touchdowns while quarterback Brock Osweiler threw for two other scores and Jamal Miles racked up Arizona State's first punt return for a touchdown since 2005 as the #25-ranked Sun Devils (AP poll; 4-1 overall, 2-0 in Pac-12 play) kept the visiting Oregon State Beavers (0-4, 0-2) winless, 35-20 on Saturday night.

At Calgary, Alberta:


In Saturday Canadian Football League action, running back Jon Cornish ran for a career-high 149 yards and two touchdowns as the Calgary Stampeders (8-5) moved into sole possession of first place in the Western Division following their 40-3 home demolition of the sinking Saskatchewan Roughriders (4-9), who suffered another blowout defeat.

At Arlington, Texas:


The Texas Rangers took advantage of wild pitches from Tampa Bay starting pitcher James Shields, scoring five runs in the fourth inning in the process,  as they squared their divisional playoff series at a game apiece following their 8-6 game-two win at home.


At New York:


Robinson Cano hit a home run and two doubles, batting in six runs in the process,  as the New York Yankees dominated the visiting Detroit Tigers 9-3 as the teams concluded their series opener that had been suspended in the second inning Friday night due to rain.

The National League baseball playoffs began on Saturday with the opening game of each of the two best-of-five divisional playoff series.


At Milwaukee:


Yovani Gallardo pitched eight innings of one-run baseball while Prince Fielder hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning as the Milwaukee Brewers took the opening game of their divisional playoff series, 4-1 at home over the Arizona Diamondbacks.


At Philadelphia:


Ryan Howard hit a go-ahead three-run home as part of a five-run sixth inning as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the visiting St. Louis Cardinals 9-3 in game one of their divisional playoff series.

AFL PREMIERSHIP: CATS BREAK OPEN TIGHT GAME WITH MAGPIES TO CLAIM CROWN

At Melbourne, Australia:

The Geelong Cats scored five goals (six points apiece) compared to the Collingwood Magpies' none in the fourth quarter as they won the Australian Football League's title match by a score of 119 (18 goals and 11 behinds, the latter worth a point apiece) to 81 (12 goals and 9 behinds) on Saturday for their third title in five years.
