At Detroit:

In eight gritty innings of work, Justin Verlander struck out 11 batters while Jose Valverde stopped a New York rally for the second straight night, striking out Derek Jeter with two men on base in the ninth inning as the Detroit Tigers took game three with the visiting Yankees 5-4 to take a two-games-to-one series lead.  Delmon Young hit a tiebreaking home run off New York pitcher Rafael Soriano in the seventh inning.
