Merlin Olsen, R. I. P.

Merlin Olsen, the longtime defensive lineman who was part of the Los Angeles Rams' "Fearsome Foursome" of the 1960s, who went on to a successful television career, passed away on Thursday at his Los Angeles home at age 69.

Mr. Olsen had been suffering from mesothelioma, a cancer of the lung lining.

Merlin spent his entire 15-year NFL career with the Rams, having been selected to 14 consecutive Pro Bowls enroute to his election in 1982 to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

He became an established television actor with a role on Little House on the Prairie, then starring in the title role in his own series Father Murphy, which ran from 1981 to 1983.

Merlin was also an accomplished anylist on NFL telecasts on NBC and CBS during the 1970s and 1980s.
